Back Pain and Posture: A Chiropractor's Guide for Busy Adults

Most of the adults who walk into our Ashland office say some version of the same thing: "I figured it would just go away." The stiff low back after a weekend of yard work. The neck that aches by 3 p.m. every workday. The shoulder that has been "a little off" since last spring. Life is busy, and when you are taking care of everyone else, your own body tends to land at the bottom of the list.

At Thriving Family Chiropractic, we care for the whole family — and that very much includes the grown-ups. Here is what we see driving back pain and posture problems in adults across the Rogue Valley, what you can do about it at home, and how adult chiropractic care can help you feel like yourself again.

Why Back Pain Is So Common in Adults

Back pain rarely comes from one dramatic moment. Far more often, it is the result of small stresses that pile up over months and years until your body runs out of ways to compensate. The most common contributors we see include:

  • Long hours sitting. Desk jobs, commutes, and evenings on the couch keep the hips flexed and the upper back rounded for hours at a time.
  • Repetitive lifting and carrying. Toddlers on one hip, grocery bags, firewood, gardening, moving furniture — the same motions, usually favoring the same side.
  • Screen posture. Looking down at a phone shifts the head forward and loads the neck and upper back far more than an upright posture does.
  • Stress. When life is stressful, muscles in the neck, shoulders, and low back stay tense, and that tension changes how your joints move.
  • Old injuries. A sports injury, car accident, or fall from years ago can leave behind patterns your body has quietly worked around ever since.

None of these is a big deal on its own. Together, they create the kind of nagging pain that slowly becomes "normal."

What Poor Posture Actually Does to Your Body

Posture is more than how you look in photos. It shapes how your joints, muscles, and nerves function all day long.

When your head drifts forward, the muscles at the back of your neck and upper back have to work much harder to hold it up. Over time, this can lead to tension headaches, neck pain, and tingling or tightness into the shoulders. When your mid-back rounds, your rib cage has less room to expand, which affects how deeply you breathe — a connection we explore in how to have healthy lungs for life. And when your pelvis tips from too much sitting, the low back takes on stress it was never designed to carry.

The good news: posture is not fixed. With the right support, your body can relearn healthier patterns.

Simple Habits That Help Your Back Today

You do not need a complete lifestyle overhaul to start feeling better. These small changes add up:

Move Every 30–45 Minutes

Set a timer while you work. Stand up, walk to refill your water, and do a few gentle backbends or shoulder rolls. Your spine loves movement, and short breaks prevent stiffness from setting in.

Set Up Your Workspace

Bring your screen up to eye level so you are not looking down. Keep your feet flat on the floor and your hips slightly higher than your knees. If you work from a laptop, a simple stand and separate keyboard make a big difference.

Lift with Your Legs — and Switch Sides

Whether it is a laundry basket or a 30-pound toddler, bend at the hips and knees, keep the load close to your body, and avoid twisting while lifting. If you always carry your child or bag on the same side, make a point of switching.

Strengthen Your Core and Hips

A strong core is not about crunches. Gentle exercises like bridges, bird dogs, and planks help stabilize your spine. Walking on Rogue Valley trails is a wonderful bonus — it strengthens your hips and back while clearing your head.

Watch Your Sleep Position

Sleeping on your stomach twists your neck for hours. Try sleeping on your back with a pillow under your knees, or on your side with a pillow between them.

How Chiropractic Care Helps Adults with Back Pain

When joints in your spine are not moving well, the surrounding muscles tighten to protect them, nerves can become irritated, and the rest of your body compensates. Chiropractic adjustments restore motion to those restricted joints so your body can stop guarding and start healing.

At your first visit, Dr. Hannah Conry will take a thorough history, evaluate your posture and range of motion, and look at how your whole body is working together — not just where it hurts. Dr. Hannah also uses applied kinesiology to identify muscle imbalances and underlying stressors that a standard exam can miss. Sometimes back pain is purely structural. Sometimes inflammation, nutrition, or stress are part of the picture, and nutrition coaching becomes part of the plan.

Adjustments are always tailored to you. Many adults are surprised by how gentle care can be — and by how much better they move afterward.

When to See a Chiropractor

Consider booking a visit if you notice:

  • Back or neck pain that has lasted more than a couple of weeks
  • Stiffness that makes it hard to turn your head, bend, or get up from the floor
  • Recurring tension headaches
  • Pain that returns every time you sit for a long stretch
  • Old injuries that still flare up

If you ever experience sudden severe pain, loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness that is getting worse, seek medical care right away.

Care for the Whole Family — Including You

Parents often bring their kids in first and only later realize they deserve the same care. When you feel good in your body, you have more energy, more patience, and more capacity for the people you love. Taking care of yourself is not selfish — it is part of taking care of your family.
