A Healthy Start for Baby: How a Pediatric Chiropractor Can Help

Labor and delivery are a marathon for mom and baby. It’s truly hard work, with many factors contributing to how the experience is for each mother and her little one.

Because labor can be a stressful event for both parent and child, I believe every baby would benefit from a visit with a pediatric chiropractor for an assessment to ensure optimal nervous system function.

A pediatric chiropractic assessment can help make sure your baby is in a great place for all the growth and development they’ll experience during their first year in the world!

While any baby can benefit from such an assessment, certain factors experienced during your labor and delivery might make getting an assessment even more necessary. Those factors can include:

  • Long or very short labor

  • Vacuum or forceps used during delivery

  • Cesarean delivery

  • Induction and/or pain medications

  • Restricted birthing positions (e.g. lying on one’s back with stirrups)

  • Pulling or twisting of the head during delivery

Concerned about whether or not a chiropractic adjustment is safe for your baby? When working with a baby, the chiropractor will be especially gentle.

The pediatric assessment is being done to determine joint restrictions, muscle imbalances, areas of tension, etc., and as a Webster certified pediatric chiropractor, Dr. Hannah takes extra care to use only gentle, safe movements. The pressure used is similar to what you would use when you’re testing a tomato for ripeness.

For the comfort of the baby and parents, the assessment can be done with your baby laying on the table, laying on you, or even while nursing. Often you can see the baby unwind and become more comfortable right before your eyes!

That said, it is important to choose a chiropractor that has extra training in pediatrics, like Dr. Hannah.

Curious about what some of the signs that your baby may benefit from seeing a chiropractor are? Here are a few:

  • Head is always tilted or turned one way or the other

  • Trouble latching

  • Colic

  • Spitting up a lot

  • Always seems uncomfortable

  • Trouble sleeping

  • Pain with or long duration between bowel movements

  • Poor muscle tone

It’s never too early to start the process of nervous system balancing. Dr. Hannah can even do a pediatric chiropractic assessment for your baby right after birth! The earlier and more quickly imbalances are found and treated the better.

Let’s give all our babies the benefit of a balanced nervous system to help them truly thrive.
